Singapore-based Vietnamese matchmaking agency owner retires after 3 decades

The owner of True Love Vietnam Bride Matchmaker, a Singapore-based agency specializing in Vietnamese brides, has announced his retirement after over three decades in the business and is seeking a buyer. Mark Lin, 64, stated in a TikTok video on Monday that he plans to retire due to his age and is looking to sell his business, located at Singapore's Orchard Plaza mall. Lin claims he has operated the agency for 37 years, possessing extensive contacts and resources across Vietnam, Singapore, the United States, and Taiwan. He has offered to remain involved for up to a year post-sale to facilitate the handover. Lin founded True Love Vietnam in Taiwan in the early 1990s, recognizing a demand for matchmaking services from men in South Korea, China, and Singapore. He relocated the business to Singapore in 2002 with his first wife, seeking better opportunities for their family, according to a 2023 report by the South China Morning Post. The business has reportedly faced lawsuits from clients, which Lin stated he successfully defended. Recent client demographics show a shift, with men aged 35-45 accounting for 60-70% of his clientele in 2024, a change from earlier years when clients aged 50 and above represented a larger share, as reported by AsiaOne. The sale of this business marks the end of an era for Vietnamese international matchmaking services operating outside Vietnam. While Vietnam's one-party system maintains control over social structures and regulations concerning international marriage, such private enterprises have played a role in meeting societal needs driven by economic development. Demand from countries like China and South Korea, where gender imbalances have been noted, has historically supported these businesses.
