Cambodia and Singapore Pledge to Translate Diplomatic Intentions into Tangible Economic and Social Benefits

Cambodia and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to translate diplomatic intentions into tangible economic and social benefits by implementing key agreements in trade, energy integration, education, and technical training, as well as enhancing parliamentary cooperation. This affirmation was made during a meeting between the First Vice-President of the Cambodian Senate, Mr. Uch Borarith, and the new Singaporean Ambassador to Cambodia, Mr. Pang Chee Wee, on July 31st at the Senate building in Phnom Penh. Mr. Uch Borarith highly appreciated Singapore's contribution to Cambodia's socio-economic development through cooperation in investment, trade, digital transformation, and human resource development. Regarding cooperation between legislative bodies, he highlighted parliamentary diplomacy as a key priority of Prime Minister Hun Sen (President of the Senate), aimed at strengthening friendship and cooperation with legislative institutions of all friendly countries. In this regard, the First Vice-President expressed a desire for regular consultations between the legislative bodies of Cambodia and Singapore. This, he explained, would serve to share views and positions on regional and international affairs of mutual interest, thereby strengthening the partnership and further promoting cooperation between the two countries amidst the rapidly changing and unpredictable global landscape. In response, Ambassador Pang Chee Wee pledged to convey the proposal to the Singaporean Parliament, emphasizing the strong relationship and extensive bilateral cooperation between the two nations. On economic and social relations, the Ambassador highlighted Singapore's initiatives to enhance food security, connect agricultural product supply chains, strengthen labor cooperation, and promote technical and vocational training. He also mentioned Singapore's open policy for Cambodian job seekers and the sharing of best practices in the hotel, hospitality, and food processing sectors, as well as energy cooperation under the ASEAN Power Grid framework. Mr. Uch Borarith welcomed these significant initiatives and presented Cambodia's investment potential. He encouraged Singaporean investors to invest directly in operating processing plants for specific agricultural value chains in Cambodia, stating that this would expand employment opportunities and contribute to exports to meet Singapore's domestic demand, following proper inspection standards.
