Cambodia Promotes Social Inclusion Through Special Olympics for Intellectually Disabled Athletes

Cambodia is advancing social inclusion and enhancing the well-being of individuals with intellectual disabilities through the hosting of a Special Olympics tournament. This event underscores the nation's commitment to disability support and fostering a more inclusive society. The provincial-level Special Olympics tournament, held on September 22, 2026, at the Siem Reap Provincial Stadium, was organized by the National Special Olympics Committee of Cambodia to promote disability sports nationwide. H.E. Sem Sokha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation and Vice President of the National Special Olympics Committee of Cambodia, stated that participation in such competitions significantly contributes to elevating and valuing sports for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual impairments. H.E. Sem Sokha emphasized that the tournament provides a crucial opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities to engage in social activities and improve their overall welfare. He also highlighted the event as a valuable platform for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing efforts and progress of the Special Olympics movement in Cambodia. He further noted that disability affairs are a key priority for the Cambodian government under the astute leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Bovor Thipadei Hun Manet, with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation serving as the strategic body. In his appeal, H.E. Sem Sokha urged all provincial Special Olympics committees and relevant organizations and associations that directly support individuals with intellectual disabilities to diligently care for and provide opportunities for them to train and compete, as organized annually by the National Special Olympics Committee. He underscored that the support and encouragement from the immediate families, parents, guardians, or closest individuals of these athletes are paramount in motivating their participation in sports. This initiative reflects Cambodia's dedication to building an inclusive society where all individuals, including those with disabilities, can live with dignity and participate fully in community life.
