Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay met with the Thai Minister of Energy, reaffirming deepening friendship and cooperation. He emphasized EV adoption policies for energy security and sustainable development, while Thailand pledged continued energy sector collaboration.
Laos and Thailand are looking to further strengthen their cooperation in the energy sector. On July 17, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone met with Thailand's Minister of Energy, Eknat Ekkamaranoon, and affirmed the deepening of the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The Prime Minister expressed appreciation to the Thai government and its relevant agencies for their continued support and cooperation in addressing energy-related issues. The Prime Minister encouraged the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Thailand's Ministry of Energy to maintain close consultation and coordination in developing long-term strategies to strengthen energy security and promote sustainable energy development. He specifically highlighted Laos' policy of expanding the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce fuel imports and support environmentally sustainable development. The Prime Minister asked the visiting minister to convey his warm regards to the Prime Minister of Thailand. Minister Eknat thanked the Lao government for its warm hospitality and reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Laos in the energy sector. He stated that the Thai Ministry of Energy would continue to work closely with the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce to exchange experiences, address common challenges, and implement the guidance of both governments, particularly in maintaining energy stability and promoting long-term sustainable trade and investment cooperation. Laos, pursuing economic development under its one-party system, places importance on its relationships with neighboring countries. Relations with traditional friends like Vietnam and Thailand play a significant role in economic assistance, infrastructure development, and trade. However, its increasing economic dependence on China is also noted, making the strengthened cooperation with Thailand in the energy sector noteworthy from the perspective of economic diversification and sustainability.
