The Vietnamese government has approved a national program for science, technology, and innovation in strategic technology fields, marking a significant step towards strengthening the nation's technological competitiveness. On August 6, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung signed Decision No. 1493/QĐ-TTg, approving the National Program for Science, Technology, and Innovation on Strategic Technologies. This initiative aims to capitalize on the wave of advancing strategic technologies and establish the country's technological advantage. Quantum technology is particularly highlighted as a crucial pillar of the national strategy, with the objective of protecting technological sovereignty and integrating into the global digital space. Furthermore, a policy has been introduced to offer government scholarships to students who excel in basic sciences, key technologies, and strategic technology fields. This measure is vital for attracting and nurturing high-quality human resources in these critical areas. The program seeks to overcome bottlenecks in the development of strategic technologies and promote the application of research outcomes into practical use. It also includes support measures to enhance human resource training in strategic technology sectors, thereby boosting international competitiveness. As Vietnam pursues economic growth under its one-party system, it aims to upgrade its industries through technological innovation and elevate its standing in the international community. Particularly amidst complex relations with China, enhancing technological independence is deemed crucial from a national security perspective. The approval of this program represents a concrete action plan to achieve these objectives.
