Junta launches fierce offensive to recapture strategic territory from Arakan Army

Intense fighting has erupted along the rugged border of Myanmar's Arakan (Rakhine) State and Magway Region as the military junta launches a fierce offensive to recapture strategic territory from the Arakan Army (AA) and allied resistance forces. The regime is aggressively advancing toward Goteseeyoe village, a key route near the besieged Nat Yay Kan tactical hilltop base. On August 6, heavy clashes broke out along the Arakan mountain range, with advancing junta troops heavily backed by artillery fire, drone strikes, and fighter jets. “Yesterday, the regime launched heavy attacks in the area using artillery, drones, and jet fighters,” a military source reported. “The military base in this village was captured by the Arakan Army and allied forces long ago, but clashes have continued in the surrounding area in recent days.” A critical element of the conflict is the region's geopolitical value. The targeted route connects to the Kamyinkan outpost—a site the junta once used to secure a major Chinese natural gas pipeline before it fell to resistance forces in early 2025. "The regime is attempting to clear a route between Nat Yay Kan and Kamyinkan," another source explained. "Unable to advance through Gotegyi, they are targeting this middle route. If they gain control of it, it would achieve two objectives at once. However, under the current circumstances, that remains far beyond their reach." With the AA and allied forces surrounding the main Nat Yay Kan base, the junta has desperately deployed reinforcements, including troops from the Padan-based Artillery Battalion No. 905. However, junta columns attempting to advance near the villages of Gotegyi and Pazi have been repeatedly intercepted and forced to retreat by revolutionary forces. “The Arakan mountain range has become a major battlefield; jet engines and artillery fire can be heard every day,” said a person familiar with the ground situation. “Because the regime refuses to abandon Nat Yay Kan, heavy fighting continues. These areas are strategically critical for both the regime and the revolutionary forces, creating a deadlock where neither side can withdraw.” Unable to break the siege on the ground, the military regime has resorted to relentless aerial bombardments on surrounding villages, including Kamyinkan and Goteseeyoe. On August 2, the military deployed coordinated formations of jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft to conduct a two-hour bombing campaign in the area, signaling preparations for further ground assaults.
