Cambodia Cracks Down on Smuggling from Thailand in Malay District, Two Cases Seized
Cambodian authorities have intensified crackdowns on illegal goods smuggling from Thailand in the Malay district of Banteay Meanchey province. Two cases involving smuggled timber and assorted goods were seized between July 16th and 17th. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects who fled the scene.
Authorities in the Malay district of Banteay Meanchey province, northwestern Cambodia, have intensified their crackdown on the illegal smuggling of goods from Thailand. Amidst the government's firm stance against illegal imports, border security forces have intercepted smuggling activities that were occurring both day and night, despite the complete closure of the land border. On the afternoon of July 16th, a force from the Malay district gendarmerie, along with a joint unit, seized a vehicle carrying 24 illegally logged logs that were being smuggled from Thailand into Cambodia. The seizure took place in Kbal Spean village, Malay district (opposite Nong Phre village, Panseuk commune, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, Thailand). Furthermore, in the early morning hours of July 17th, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Pe Bun Chorn, acting commander of the Malay district gendarmerie, assorted goods, including 23 sacks and 2 boxes, were confiscated in Trasek Chum village, Malay district (bordering Nong Phre village, Panseuk commune, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, Thailand), which had been illicitly brought in from Thailand. Mr. Svay Chea, the district governor of Malay, stated that as part of the district's unified command, and in accordance with government directives, authorities have been diligently working to prevent and suppress cross-border smuggling of goods. Regarding the seized items, officials were unable to apprehend the smugglers or transporters, as the perpetrators had fled, leaving behind only the evidence and the means of transport. The district gendarmerie plans to continue its investigation to apprehend the suspects and proceed with legal procedures. This intensified enforcement comes amid calls within Cambodia to boycott Thai products, reflecting the government's commitment to protecting domestic industries and eradicating illegal activities.
