Wawonii Island Community Fights for Marine Preservation Amidst Nickel Mining Threats

On Wawonii Island, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, residents are facing the arduous challenge of marine environmental preservation. The island's community has long relied on its rich seas and forests, but in recent years, these resources have been threatened by destructive fishing practices and nickel mining development. Wa Niia, a 57-year-old woman, was observed walking slowly among the corals near Tekonea Beach in East Wawonii District, using a sharp iron rod to dig into the sand and catch fish. "This is for our meals, not for sale," she stated. Like many others, she relies on catching octopus and fish along the coast for her daily sustenance. However, Wa Niia has witnessed firsthand the widespread death and bleaching of coral reefs. According to the local community, this is largely attributed to the use of potassium cyanide (potas) in fishing over the past four years. This issue exacerbates the impact of long-standing destructive fishing methods, such as blast fishing. Amidst this escalating environmental degradation, the people of Wawonii Island are continuing their efforts to conserve their coastlines and seas. As part of these efforts, groups like 'Muda Jaga Laut dan Pesisir Tahi Tewabuno' (Youth for Marine and Coastal Guardians) have been formed to strengthen community collaboration and promote sustainable resource utilization.
