Church-led group urges systemic reforms, accountability ahead of SONA

A church-led coalition in the Philippines is calling for sweeping reforms and accountability within the country's political and economic systems, arguing that simply replacing government leaders will not address the challenges faced by many Filipinos. The group, known as the White Ribbon Movement, stated that a "systemic transformation" is necessary to end corruption, abuse, and inequality, and urged that government policies must respond to the needs of ordinary citizens. Rev. Jose Colin Bagaforo, chairperson of the Inter-Religious Leaders’ Council for National Transformation (IRLCNT), noted that despite the Philippines achieving upper middle-income country status, many Filipinos still consider themselves poor, with high unemployment rates persisting. The group advocates for policies that ensure a living wage, adequate income opportunities, lower taxes, reduced prices for basic commodities, quality education, accessible healthcare services, and decent housing. They also urged the government to prioritize the welfare of Filipinos in the crafting of the national budget. The White Ribbon Movement is also pushing for the passage of an anti-political dynasty law and reforms to the country's party-list system, deeming these measures essential for strengthening democratic representation. The coalition announced plans to hold a protest during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) to press their demands and encouraged the public to join the mobilization.
