Myanmar Junta Launches Offensive to Reclaim Strategic Pathein-Monywa Highway Amid Intense Clashes with AA-Led Coalition

Burma News International (BNI) is a network of 15 independent media and news organizations based in and around Burma Heavy fighting has intensified in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyarwady Region, as the Myanmar military regime launches a major offensive to assert control over key sections of the strategic Pathein-Monywa highway, currently contested by a coalition led by the Arakan Army (AA). According to a July 4 combat update by the AA, clashes are simultaneously raging in neighboring Yekyi Township. The military junta has reportedly massed troops and advanced near Myauksan Village — the headquarters of the regime's Artillery Battalion No. 344 — as well as along the strategically vital Ngathaingchaung–Gwa road, which cuts through the mountainous border between Ayeyarwady Region and Arakan (Rakhine) State. The AA statement noted that the junta is heavily reinforcing its frontlines, deploying fresh troops from Pathein-based battalions along the Pathein-Monywa road section in Laymyethna Township. To breach resistance lines, the military has unleashed overwhelming firepower, executing relentless artillery barrages, airstrikes, and deploying kamikaze (suicide) drones against coalition positions. Despite the junta's multi-pronged offensive, the AA announced that its forces successfully overran and captured two strategic tactical hilltop outposts situated directly beneath the military’s key "Point 227" high-ground position in Yekyi Township during intense engagements on July 2 and 3. The Pathein-Monywa Highway is Western Myanmar’s primary logistical artery, stretching over 416 miles from Pathein in the coastal Ayeyarwady delta up to Monywa in the northwest Sagaing Region. Passing through four major administrative divisions — Ayeyarwady, Bago, Magway, and Sagaing — the highway serves as a vital corridor linking the country’s central heartland with coastal trade networks. Amid the widening civil war, the highway has been transformed into a highly militarized and heavily contested frontline. Presently, fierce clashes are erupting across multiple sectors of the highway, spanning Sagaing and Magway regions, Mindon Township, and the Ayeyarwady cluster of Laymyethna, Yekyi, and Ingapu townships. The conflict pits junta forces against an array of local resistance forces, including the AA and regional People’s Defence Forces (PDFs). As a consequence of the escalating hostilities, several sections of the highway have suffered severe infrastructural damage, forcing strict security closures and halting all civilian transit along this critical western route.
