Military Operation in Ponnagyun and Rathedaung, Junta Forces Suffer Heavy Casualties, Lose Some Bases and Outposts Due to AA Counteroffensive

In the border area of Sittwe and Ponnagyun townships in Rakhine State, the junta forces launched an offensive starting September 4, utilizing air, sea, and heavy artillery support. However, due to the Arakan Army's (AA) counteroffensive, the AA has seized and controlled some of the military's bases and outposts, it has been learned. As of September 17, the AA had taken control of up to four military outposts, forcing the military to retreat, according to reports. The junta forces advancing from Sittwe towards Ponnagyun were unable to proceed further and were forced to withdraw. The AA has managed to control some of the military's footholds in areas such as Aunggyaw Bridge, around Kankaw Island near the Shwe Myint Gyi naval base, and in the vicinity of Sarpata, Sarpotan, and Kamaungtaw villages within Ponnagyun township. "After losing half of their strength in the southern Rakhine operation, they have now started a northern operation again. We have heard that they suffered heavy losses and surrendered in large numbers," a Rakhine source told the Irrawaddy Times. Currently, fierce fighting continues between the troops that arrived from the Shwe Myint Gyi naval base and the AA near Ye Yoe Pyin village, with the military suffering numerous casualties. Intense battles occurred near Taungpauk village in Ponnagyun township. Although ground troops could not advance beyond Kantaw village, naval vessels approached the bridge near the town entrance along the Kaladan River. In this operation, troops under Division 101, as well as ALP members, were deployed. However, they were ineffective and suffered significant losses. Preparations are underway to reinforce the regiments in Sittwe city. Furthermore, daily airstrikes are being conducted. Similarly, naval ships have fired heavy artillery at Moe Say Island in Rathedaung township and Santawshin Hill in Wilarthani (Pauktaw) township. The junta forces are prioritizing control of the Rathedaung junction over capturing Ponnagyun. If this junction is controlled, it will allow them to cut off access to northern Rakhine regions such as Rathedaung, Buthidaung, and Maungdaw. Therefore, they are working to ensure that the communication route between Min Chaung Bridge and Kantaw is not disrupted, it has been learned.
