Floating Island on Vietnamese Lake Mysteriously Appears and Disappears, Sparking AI Image Doubts

A mysterious 'phantom island' on a Vietnamese lake has captured public attention due to its peculiar movements, often mistaken for AI-generated images. The island, approximately 9,800 square meters in size, teems with rich vegetation and diverse flora and fauna, yet it repeatedly vanishes and reappears. According to local media, the island gained widespread recognition in mid-August after photos and videos taken by a local kayaker appeared on social media. Initially, many doubted its existence, suspecting the images were AI fabrications. A spokesperson for BC Hydro stated, 'In the age of AI, some form of verification or other evidence, such as independent witness accounts, is truly needed.' To investigate, experts cross-referenced free satellite data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Earth observation satellite, Sentinel-2. The results showed that while the island appeared as a small green dot on the lake on July 21, it had vanished by August 5. By mid-August, it reappeared about 32 kilometers northwest of its initial sighting and continued to move, with reports indicating it was found on August 31 in the Ospika River, which flows into the lake. BC Hydro speculates that the island formed over years of vegetation growth on debris accumulated along sheltered lake shores. The company explains that the island detached from the shore due to the lake's water level reaching its highest point in 14 years, a result of significant winter snowmelt and continuous summer rainfall. 'Suddenly, all the conditions were right to detach the small island from where it was and bring it out into the wider water,' a representative said. 'The fact that it seems to disappear doesn't mean it sank to the bottom of the lake, but it might have returned to a more secluded area along the shore.' The island is a vibrant ecosystem, home to birds and small animals, with its submerged root system potentially serving as a refuge for some fish species. While the exact age of the trees on the island is unknown, local residents suggest they could be decades old. Experts liken the growth conditions to hydroponics, noting that trees 'are provided with plenty of nutrients and grow on decomposing food sources with lots of water, and can grow quite quickly.'
