War Martyrs' Remains, Artifacts Found in Da Nang; DNA Tech for Identification Advanced

A mass grave of war martyrs, containing remains and artifacts, has been discovered in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang. This discovery provides valuable information and further evidence of those who fought and sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom. It is expected to further accelerate the search for missing soldiers and reflects Vietnam's long-standing tradition of gratitude. In response, the Vietnamese government is accelerating efforts to enhance bone identification technology and improve forensic institutions. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra inspected the practical implementation of DNA identification technology at the Centre for DNA Identification under the Institute of Biology of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and the Military Institute of Forensic Medicine under the Military Medical Department of the Ministry of National Defence on September 14. The Ministry of Public Security will fast-track a project to build a repository capable of storing about 2 million biological samples from relatives for at least 50 years. The continued recovery of martyrs’ remains not only enables the identification of those buried but also serves as a concrete demonstration of the state's respect and gratitude towards fallen soldiers and their families. Under Vietnam's one-party system, honoring contributions and sacrifices to the nation is a crucial element in strengthening national unity. The recent discovery and the government's swift response signify a strong commitment to remembering past sacrifices and conveying that history to present and future generations. While Vietnam continues its economic growth, the nation's development is shadowed by the numerous sacrifices made during past wars. The recovery and commemoration of these remains also play a role in fostering patriotism among citizens and strengthening social cohesion.
