Road to General Giap Memorial Remains Incomplete After a Decade

In the central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh, a connecting road from National Highway 1 to the memorial house of General Vo Nguyen Giap, a revered figure in Vietnam's history, remains incomplete a decade after construction began. The project was intended to improve access to the memorial, located in Le Thuy district, General Giap's birthplace, and enhance convenience for domestic and international visitors. However, due to repeated delays, the road's opening is still uncertain after ten years since its inception. This situation not only causes inconvenience to local residents' daily lives but also raises concerns about the prolonged inadequacy of access to a site meant to honor a national hero. In Vietnam, discrepancies between planning and execution are often noted in development projects under the one-party system. Infrastructure development, in particular, frequently experiences delays due to issues such as budget allocation, land acquisition, or difficulties in coordination among local authorities. This unfinished road highlights challenges in the efficiency and execution of public projects, even as Vietnam experiences significant economic growth. Furthermore, as the country strengthens its economic ties with China, delays in domestic infrastructure development could potentially hinder long-term economic progress.
