Cambodia Identifies Drunk Driving, Speeding, and Mental Health Issues as Major Traffic Accident Causes

In Cambodia, three main factors have been identified as the primary causes of traffic accidents: drunk driving, excessive speeding in unauthorized areas, and drivers experiencing mental health issues. This was stated by Mr. Yin Sopheap, founder of the "Kru Nom" school, in an interview with Kampuchea Thmey Daily. According to Mr. Sopheap, drunk driving is the most significant contributor to accidents, and he emphasized that implementing alcohol checks is a crucial measure to prevent drunk driving and reduce the risk of traffic collisions. He also pointed out that speeding, especially in densely populated areas or places with high pedestrian traffic, carries a high risk of accidents. Furthermore, Mr. Sopheap highlighted the growing trend of mental health problems in Cambodian society. He expressed concern that drivers facing psychological distress may experience impaired concentration and self-control while driving, potentially increasing the danger to themselves and others on the road. "So, these three are the sources that cause accidents. Therefore, strengthening law enforcement is the most important," Mr. Sopheap stated. These remarks coincide with the resumption of traffic law enforcement in Cambodia, which began on September 1st, after a temporary suspension due to issues at the Cambodia-Thailand border.
