Seagrass beds along Cambodia's coast, particularly around the Kep province archipelago, are playing a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, according to research by Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC). MCC points out that while many people are aware of coral reefs, there is a lack of understanding regarding the importance of seagrass growing beneath the water's surface. The organization's report, dated September 17, 2026, indicates that Cambodia's seagrass beds are primarily composed of key species such as Halophila ovalis, Enhalus acoroides, and Oceana serrulata. These seagrasses not only provide habitats and spawning grounds for marine life but also play a role in preventing coastal erosion and absorbing carbon dioxide. MCC's research team conducts regular diving surveys of these seagrass beds to monitor changes over time and contribute to their long-term conservation.
