August 9 Mizzima. -- Today, August 9, is World Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to honour the important role indigenous peoples play in protecting their culture, traditions, knowledge, and nature, the Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (KESAN) announced. This year, KESAN has especially honoured Karen indigenous mothers with traditional knowledge, stating that their traditional knowledge and care for newborn babies have protected the health of Karen society for generations. These traditional practices are intended to be passed on to future generations, and KESAN has indicated that the aim is for Karen youth to continue to preserve and strengthen traditional knowledge, which is a part of their culture and heritage. Despite facing ongoing threats from the Myanmar military and the global climate crisis in the Kothar region, Karen indigenous communities continue to protect the unique connection between their societies and the natural environment. KESAN stated that the nature conservation efforts of the Karen indigenous peoples demonstrate their important role in protecting the environment and sustainably maintaining their lands for future generations. The statement also mentioned that indigenous peoples continue to face threats to their rights, lands, cultures, and ways of life. Therefore, on World Indigenous Peoples Day, KESAN has pledged to recognize, respect, and promote the rights of indigenous peoples, and to continue protecting their societies, cultures, and the environment with equality, dignity, and justice.
