Isko Warns Fusion Alley of Shutdown Over Sanitation Issues

MANILA, Philippines — Mayor Isko Moreno has issued a stern warning regarding Fusion Alley, a popular food strip in Sampaloc, indicating that the area could face closure due to persistent sanitation issues. The warning comes in response to ongoing complaints from residents concerning garbage, foul odors, and noise emanating from the vicinity. Mayor Moreno convened a consultation with vendors from Fusion Alley at City Hall on Thursday to address the concerns. He stated clearly, "If I see them being dirty and untidy, I would not hesitate to shut it down." He emphasized the importance of order, cleanliness, and discipline, even while supporting the livelihoods of the vendors. The issue gained prominence after a student raised concerns in a forum about the inconvenience caused by Fusion Alley to local residents. Initially, Mayor Moreno had defended the food strip, highlighting the "opportunity to become millionaires" it has provided to many vendors. "All that I am asking of them is for the street to be usable and passable in the morning," Moreno said, urging vendors to maintain cleanliness. In response, Manila's Department of Environment and Public Services has been tasked with conducting regular flushing operations to mitigate foul odors and manage waste. "As I have said before, even if only one person raises a complaint, we listen. But, I also understand the aspirations of our fellow Filipinos who are trying to earn a living," Moreno added, underscoring his commitment to balancing public welfare with economic opportunities.
