Cambodia Promotes 'One Family, One Tree' Movement for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

Cambodia is actively promoting the 'One Family, One Tree' movement, aimed at fostering a deep understanding of the value of forests and cultivating a spirit of loving nature among its citizens. This initiative encourages tree planting in various locations, including homes, schools, pagodas, and public spaces, while also enhancing environmental education. On September 20, 2026, His Excellency Dr. Men Sam An, Senior Advisor to His Majesty the King, presided over a tree-planting ceremony at the Chheu Khmou Special Economic Zone in Svay Rieng City, Svay Rieng Province, where 2,200 saplings were planted. Additionally, 16,000 saplings were distributed to the eight districts and municipalities throughout the province. The event, themed 'Let's Plant Trees Together to Increase Green Cover, Enhance the Environment, and Sustainably Develop the Special Economic Zone,' is expected to contribute to reducing dust, smoke, and heat in industrial areas, and fostering a conducive working environment and ecosystem. While promoting this movement, HE Dr. Men Sam An recalled the noble royal initiative of His Majesty the King Father of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk, who initiated the 'Rukkhak Day' (Tree Planting Day) national movement. This movement, held annually in various provinces during the socialist era, aimed to inspire and encourage the younger generation to participate in protecting forests and planting trees nationwide. The Cambodian government, under the wise and capable leadership of His Excellency Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate, and now continued by His Excellency Hun Manet, the Prime Minister, has consistently organized 'Rukkhak Day' ceremonies each year. HE Men Sam An further emphasized that the tree-planting event at the Chheu Khmou Special Economic Zone and the distribution of saplings not only serve to boost the tree-planting movement and increase green cover in Svay Rieng Province but also contribute to promoting excellent cultural practices and serve as a significant national movement. This aligns with the national policy of enhancing natural resources and promoting sustainable conservation. Planting trees and protecting forests are described as acts of self-preservation that can help mitigate climate change, ensure safety from natural disasters, and provide hope for future generations. The spirit of loving and protecting forests is clearly reflected in the long-term vision of HE Hun Sen, who once stated, 'Planting saplings is not just about restoring forest cover, but it is an investment in the environment and the protection of the planet for future generations.'
