UN Secretary-General Warns of Risk of Myanmar Issue Being Forgotten Amidst Rising Violence and Crime, Forcing Many to Flee Homes

Despite the rise in violence in Myanmar, the displacement of a large number of people from their homes, and the widespread cross-border criminal activities, Myanmar is facing the risk of its issue fading from international attention, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned. He made these remarks in his speech on the first day of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, held in New York, USA, on September 22. He reiterated his strong call for the international community to continue supporting efforts for peacebuilding, the protection of civilians, and ensuring full humanitarian access, without forgetting the people of Myanmar. In this General Assembly, the Secretary-General also specifically addressed the severe situations in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan, in addition to Myanmar, and the conditions faced by civilians in these countries. The 81st United Nations General Assembly, being held in New York from September 22 to 26 and on the 28th, is attended by world leaders who are primarily discussing ways to address ongoing global conflicts, climate change, and issues related to artificial intelligence (AI).
