Thai Durian Exports Face Challenges Amidst Increased Production, High Costs, and Fierce Competition
Thai durian exports reached 1.11 million tons worth 127 billion baht in the first seven months of the year. Despite increased production, high costs and intensifying international competition pose significant challenges for the industry.
Thai durian exports have achieved a record high in the first seven months of the year, reaching 1.11 million tons and totaling 127 billion baht. This indicates Thailand's firm position as the world's leading durian exporter. However, behind these strong export figures, several serious challenges are emerging. Firstly, while increased production is welcome, rising associated costs are squeezing producers' profits. The surge in production expenses, including fertilizers, pesticides, and labor, can diminish the international competitiveness of Thai durian. Furthermore, competition in the global market, particularly in China, the primary export destination, is intensifying. Neighboring countries like Vietnam and Malaysia are also boosting their durian production, subjecting Thai durian to fierce competition in both price and quality. To address these challenges, the Thai government and related industries must explore avenues such as developing new markets, enhancing added value through processed durian products, and adopting sustainable production methods. Diversifying beyond over-reliance on the Chinese market and expanding exports to intra-ASEAN regions and Western markets will be crucial for the stable growth of Thailand's durian industry in the future.
