Cambodia Accuses Thailand of Failing to Fully Implement Border Ceasefire Agreement

PHNOM PENH, Sept 7, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has accused Thailand of failing to fully implement a key provision of their ceasefire agreement, urging Bangkok to resume border surveying and demarcation through established mechanisms. Government spokesman Pen Bona said Thailand had not honored Point 3 of the joint statement signed on December 27, 2025, which stipulates that ceasefire arrangements must not affect the international boundary and that the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) should continue its work “as soon as possible.” Bona stressed that both sides agreed to use the JBC’s mechanisms to ensure the safety of Joint Survey Teams, including protection against landmines, and to prioritize disputed areas where civilians live. Cambodia is pressing Thailand to convene a special JBC meeting and deploy survey teams to resume field operations at sites proposed by Phnom Penh. “Only the joint technical mechanisms agreed by the two sides can address border demarcation,” Bona said, warning against unilateral actions. Cambodia also called on Thailand to halt activities in Cambodian territory that it described as attempts to create new realities on the ground. The statement comes amid continued tensions along the border. Last week, Cambodia lodged a formal protest after a Thai military helicopter allegedly entered its airspace, calling the incident a violation of sovereignty and international law. Despite the truce, Cambodia’s interior ministry reported that 18,703 people remain displaced and unable to return home, underscoring the humanitarian impact of the unresolved dispute.
