Vietnam Bolsters International Cooperation Against Transnational Cybercrime

Vietnamese police have successfully busted a transnational cybercrime ring valued at $38.4 million, highlighting the severity of cyber threats in the country and the need for cross-border countermeasures. As of April 12, the information system for managing, supervising, and preventing fraud risks in payment operations (SIMO) had issued over 3.7 million customer alerts. Consequently, more than 1.2 million customers temporarily suspended or canceled transactions after receiving warnings, involving nearly VND 4.17 trillion (approximately $158.12 million). In response, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a statement on May 9, welcoming ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation, building cybersecurity capacity, and improving protection and assistance for victims and survivors of online scams. This demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to collaborating with the international community to ensure safety in cyberspace. Under Vietnam's one-party system, maintaining social order and stability in citizens' lives is paramount, making responses to emerging threats like cybercrime essential for national stability and development. For a continuously growing economy like Vietnam, establishing a robust cybersecurity system is an urgent priority to maintain international trust and attract foreign investment. Particularly in its relationship with China, cooperation and de-escalation in cyberspace could impact regional stability.
