Krakatau Volcano Eruption: Ash Detected Over Jakarta and Western Indonesia

According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), satellite imagery has detected the spread of volcanic ash following an eruption from Krakatau volcano. The observed volcanic ash is heading towards Jakarta, Banten, and West Java at an altitude of 20,000 feet (approximately 6,000 meters). At higher altitudes of 50,000 feet (approximately 15,000 meters), the ash plume has spread further, reaching Lampung, Bengkulu, and the Indian Ocean. Krakatau volcano, located in the Sunda Strait, is an active volcano that has caused major eruptions in the past.
