President Prabowo to Inaugurate Masela Block Development Groundbreaking
Indonesian President Prabowo is set to inaugurate the groundbreaking ceremony for the Masela Block, a major natural gas development project. With an estimated investment of US$20.9 billion, the project is poised to significantly contribute to Indonesia's energy security and economic growth.
Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto will inaugurate the groundbreaking ceremony for the Masela Block project in Tanimbar Islands, Ambon, on Thursday, July 16, 2026. He stated that this gas project is the largest in Indonesia. "Tomorrow, yes tomorrow (Masela Block groundbreaking). God willing, the President will inaugurate the Masela Block groundbreaking," said Bahlil at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (14/7/2026). He could not yet confirm whether President Prabowo would attend the ceremony in person in Tanimbar Islands or virtually, stating that the decision would be made by the President himself. Previously, the Abadi Field of the Masela Block is located offshore in the Arafura Sea, Maluku. The Masela Block is one of the strategic projects in the oil and gas sector with an investment value of US$20.9 billion or around Rp 355 trillion. This Abadi gas field is estimated to have gas reserves of 6.97 trillion cubic feet (TCF) and is one of the largest deep-sea gas fields in Indonesia. The journey of this project began on November 16, 1998, when the Indonesian government signed a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with Inpex Corporation as the operator of the Masela Block. Two years later, precisely in 2000, Inpex discovered giant gas reserves in the Abadi Field. The government then included the Masela Block in the National Strategic Projects (PSN). Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia had previously admitted to urging Inpex Masela Ltd to start production of the Abadi Field Masela Block oil and gas project in 2029. This urgency stemmed from his discovery that 301 concession wells had completed their Plan of Development (PoD) but had not yet entered the production stage, including the Masela Block. Not long after, Inpex Masela Ltd began the tender process. The project is targeted to enter the construction phase in 2027. Meanwhile, initial production (on-stream) is expected to begin in 2029. "In 2029 to 2030, it can already produce, and it is one of the largest giants in Indonesia," said Bahlil on Friday (26/6/2026).
