FACT CHECK: Malacañang Not Locked Down After VP Sara's Arrest Warrant
A viral claim on social media alleging that Malacañang was placed under lockdown following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Vice President Sara Duterte has been debunked by Rappler's fact-check. The Palace continued its normal operations, with no evidence of a lockdown.
A claim circulating on social media that Malacañang was placed under lockdown following the issuance of an arrest warrant against Vice President Sara Duterte has been debunked as false by Rappler's fact-check. The false information gained traction through a video posted on September 6, which garnered tens of thousands of views, reactions, and shares. The video claimed that barricades and barbed wires were installed at Malacañang following the arrest of Vice President Duterte. However, Rappler confirmed that no lockdown measures were implemented at Malacañang after the arrest warrant was issued on September 4 and after Duterte posted bail on September 5. There are no credible reports of barricades and barbed wires being installed in the area. While Malacañang has implemented heightened security measures in the past due to rallies and other events, these are not directly related to the current claim. Most recently, security forces conducted a simulation exercise and installed metal barricades and razor wire on roads leading to the Malacañang Complex in preparation for National Heroes Day activities on August 31. The arrest warrant against Duterte was issued after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court found probable cause to hold the Vice President for trial on three counts of grave threats. The case stems from Duterte's alleged November 2024 warning that she hired an assassin to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Duterte posted bail amounting to P360,000, with P120,000 for each count. After posting bail, she stated that she "does not feel safe anywhere," citing previous alleged security threats. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla assured that Duterte was accorded the respect due to her position and confirmed that bodycam footage of her arrest and bail process was recorded.
