Vietnam's Northern Mountains: The S-Shaped Road Amidst Golden Rice Terraces

The 'S-shaped' road in Y Ty, Lào Cai Province, northern Vietnam, approximately 5 km from the town center, is drawing significant attention from tourists. Winding along the mountainside, this scenic route meanders through lush green forests and vibrant golden rice terraces, creating a breathtaking panorama. Located on provincial road 158, the road's continuous curves, when viewed from above, resemble the letter 'S'. Several small stalls are situated along the route, offering visitors a place to rest and capture photographs. The spot considered to offer the clearest and most beautiful view of the S-curve requires a fee of 10,000 Vietnamese dong. Giang Trịnh from Hanoi, who visited Y Ty during the September 2nd holiday, noted that the location is a major draw for tourists, stating, "Checking in here is enough to show you've been to Y Ty." The stretch, less than 1 km long, is part of the journey to explore the highland villages of Y Ty, including A Lù, Ngải Thầu, Lao Chải, and Thèn Pả, as well as the surrounding terraced fields. Visitors are advised to drive slowly due to the winding nature of the road and the presence of other tourists stopping for photos. The S-curve is enveloped by expansive rice terraces, with traditional low-roofed houses peeking out from beneath the mountains. Giang mentioned that a short 200-meter walk from the stalls provides an excellent vantage point for close-up shots of the ripe paddy fields without significant crowds. In recent days, many tourists have traveled hundreds of kilometers to Y Ty to capture photos amidst the golden ripening rice fields. Local guide Quốc Toản stated that this week and next are the peak times for the rice in Y Ty to reach its most beautiful golden hue, with harvesting expected to begin after September 20th. Y Ty is a highland border region in Lào Cai Province, situated at an altitude of over 2,000 meters above sea level, about 70 km from Lào Cai city. The terrain is characterized by high mountains, narrow valleys, and steep slopes. These natural conditions have shaped Y Ty's distinctive landscape, featuring villages of the Hà Nhì, Mông, and Dao ethnic groups nestled among the terraced fields.
