NBI Aims to Conclude SEA Games Irregularities Probe in 3-4 Weeks

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is targeting to finish its investigation into the alleged irregularities in the country’s hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games within three to four weeks, according to Director Melvin Matibag on Tuesday. “I think in three to four weeks, we can finish the investigation and submit the report, and then the prosecutor will decide,” Matibag said. He said the investigation is focusing on alleged malversation of funds, questionable contract procedures, and procurement irregularities during the organization of the SEA Games. This development comes after the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) faced scrutiny over its handling of funds and contracts for the 2019 games. Several lawmakers had previously called for a thorough investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. The NBI’s probe aims to determine if there were any violations of law and to hold accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing. Matibag did not provide specific details on the individuals or entities being investigated but assured the public that the NBI is conducting a thorough and impartial inquiry.
