Vietnam Enhances Road Safety with Real-Time Electronic Weather Warnings
Vietnam's Northern Road Technology and Engineering Center has implemented a system displaying real-time weather warnings on electronic signs. This allows drivers to proactively manage travel and ensure road safety amidst adverse conditions.
The Northern Road Technology and Engineering Center (under the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam) is deploying a function to provide real-time weather information on the electronic sign system (VMS) across the road and expressway networks it manages. This enables drivers to proactively grasp situations and respond more effectively to ensure safety under adverse weather conditions. The center continuously updates information on adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog, limited visibility, and strong winds on electronic signs. Drivers can easily observe this information, adjust their speed, maintain a safe distance, and choose appropriate travel routes. This function is one of the new tasks undertaken by the Northern Road Technology and Engineering Center since it was entrusted by the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam with the management and operation of the Expressway Traffic Control Center (TMC) in March 2026. Through the TMC system, early warnings are provided for traffic monitoring, incident response support, adverse weather, traffic congestion risks, accidents, and other emergent situations. According to the Northern Road Technology and Engineering Center, providing real-time warning information not only helps drivers proactively prevent risks but also assists traffic management agencies and operators in traffic coordination, contributing to ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow. In addition to operating the TMC, the center also undertakes numerous key tasks related to the digital transformation of the road sector, including monitoring the back-end of the electronic toll collection system, building a road database using AI-integrated road survey vehicles, developing a cable-stayed bridge monitoring system, and participating in the development of technical standards in the road sector. As a public service unit directly under the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, the Northern Road Technology and Engineering Center was established through the merger of existing road technical units in the northern region. The center is steadily affirming its role as a core technical unit in research, application of science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation, contributing to the modernization of road infrastructure management and operation.
