UN no longer capable of fulfilling its duty, Turkish President criticizes

To be more precise, it has been made incapable of fulfilling this duty." Erdoğan pointed out that over the past year, the UN has been unable to act in accordance with its goals and aspirations. He noted that hundreds of people have died during this period, and many more have suffered severe hardships. He highlighted that the past 12 months have been recorded as one of the bloodiest periods in the last 30 years, with over 60 conflicts and wars occurring, from Gaza to Ukraine and Russia, from Myanmar to Darfur, and from Iran to Lebanon. Furthermore, he stated that those who had placed their hopes in the UN from Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, and other crisis-stricken regions are extremely disappointed. Erdoğan expressed his support for the ongoing UN reform efforts and his hope that reforms will continue under the leadership of the new UN Secretary-General, who will assume office in January. These reforms include the restructuring of the UN Security Council, which is composed of 15 member states. The Security Council consists of five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected on a rotating basis. "We must accept that a system where the will of over 190 countries depends on the opinion of five countries is not a just system. The world is larger than five countries," the Turkish President said. He also emphasized the need for international law to be applied equally to both powerful and weak nations. Erdoğan also strongly criticized the situation in Gaza. He stated that no one with humanity and justice in their hearts can ignore what is happening in Gaza. "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has not been allowed to enter this hall for two consecutive years. The injustices committed against the Palestinian people hurt our conscience," Erdoğan said. He then urged the international community to reconsider their positions and to increase pressure on Israel to end the Gaza war, especially those countries that have not yet recognized Palestine as a state.
