Thailand, Japan Deepen Cooperation on Infrastructure and Smart Mobility Development

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Mr. Phumtham Weidchajai, is seeking to strengthen cooperation in Thailand's infrastructure development through discussions with Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). The focus is particularly on promoting smart mobility in Bangkok's Bang Sue district and formulating disaster response plans. This meeting served as an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of international partnerships as Thailand addresses challenges such as increasing urbanization, resulting strain on transportation infrastructure, and rising disaster risks due to climate change. Japan has played a significant role in Thailand's infrastructure development for many years, possessing extensive experience and technology, especially in transportation systems and urban planning. The promotion of smart mobility is expected to contribute to the efficiency of public transportation, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve air quality. Bang Sue district has recently seen development as a hub for Thailand's railway network, and the introduction of advanced mobility solutions in this area could serve as a model for Thailand's overall smart city initiatives. Furthermore, in formulating disaster response plans, the aim is to share knowledge and experience between both countries to establish a more effective and rapid response system. Thailand is exposed to risks from natural disasters such as floods and heatwaves, and Japan's disaster prevention technology and crisis management systems hold the potential to significantly contribute to enhancing Thailand's resilience. These discussions are anticipated to be a concrete step towards further deepening economic and technological cooperation between Thailand and Japan, and towards building a sustainable and safe social infrastructure.
