Jokowi Urges PSI to Aim Beyond Parliament for 2029 Elections

President Joko Widodo has urged cadres of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) to work harder to introduce the party to the public ahead of the 2029 general election. Widodo stated that PSI has set a "big target" for the 2029 elections, which goes beyond merely securing seats in the national parliament (Senayan). While the specific nature of this target was not disclosed, he indicated that PSI has calculations to penetrate the legislature. Speaking at the Regional Coordination Meeting (Rakorda) of the PSI DPD Kupang City on Saturday (1/8/2026), Widodo said, "Our target is not just a target to enter Senayan. But there is a big target that we want to achieve. But it doesn't need to be announced here." He noted that PSI has calculations to penetrate the parliament in the 2029 General Election. He assessed that the enthusiasm of the cadres and the public who packed the PSI Rakorda in Kupang City became an important capital to achieve this target. "If the Rakorda at the Kupang City level is full like this, what are we afraid of? What are we worried about? At that time in Lampung it was also the same, many like this. What are we worried about?" he expressed. Widodo emphasized that PSI's strength is not only measured by the number of seats obtained in legislative institutions. According to him, strengthening the organizational structure down to the village level is also an important part of building the party's strength. "What I am targeting is that from the DPRD to village organizational structures are formed, and this is the great strength of the Elephant Party," he asserted. On that occasion, Widodo also highlighted the increase in PSI's seat acquisition in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). He mentioned that PSI only had 11 DPRD seats in NTT in 2019. This number then increased to 34 seats after the 2024 Election. Seeing this development, Widodo believes that NTT has the potential to become one of PSI's main bases in facing the 2029 General Election.
