Cambodia and Thailand Conclude UNCLOS Maritime Boundary Delimitation Talks

Cambodia and Thailand concluded their discussions on maritime boundary delimitation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in Singapore on September 14, 2026. The closed-door meeting was chaired by Ms. Katrina Cooper, President of the Conciliation Commission. Cambodia's delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn, who represented the Kingdom of Cambodia along with legal experts. The Thai delegation was headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, serving as the Thai representative. This consultation marks a significant step towards clarifying maritime boundaries between the two nations, crucial for resource management and navigation safety. UNCLOS provides the international legal framework for the seas, and delimitation under its provisions is vital for preventing disputes and fostering cooperative relations among coastal states. In recent years, Cambodia has increasingly focused on developing its marine resources and protecting its territorial waters, driven by economic growth. Thailand also recognizes the importance of its maritime economy. Cooperation between the two countries is expected to contribute to strengthening regional maritime governance.
