Vietnam's Top Leader Advances International Cooperation During US, Canada Visits

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam has concluded visits to the United States and Canada, aimed at strengthening international cooperation and deepening economic ties. During his stay in New York, General Secretary and President To Lam met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters and witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between Vietnam and the UN. He also held discussions with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, who affirmed the UN's support for Vietnam's enhanced engagement in peacekeeping operations. Furthermore, meetings were held with representatives from major US companies JPMorganChase and Visa to discuss cooperation in economic and financial sectors. While in the US, General Secretary and President To Lam proposed four major orientations to steer and manage change, ensuring that competition does not turn into confrontation, differences do not lead to conflict, and scientific-technological progress does not create new divisions. This signals Vietnam's intention to play a constructive role in the international community. His visit to Canada began with a state visit to Ottawa at the invitation of Governor General Louise Arbour. These visits are seen as part of Vietnam's diplomatic strategy to enhance its presence on the global stage and strengthen multilateral cooperation. In the defense sector, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations in New York to discuss Vietnam's expanded involvement in peacekeeping. Additionally, a Royal Australian Air Force transport aircraft arrived in Hanoi to carry Vietnam's Level-2 Field Hospital unit to South Sudan, demonstrating Vietnam's active contribution to UN peacekeeping efforts. General Secretary and President To Lam also met with Vietnamese experts and intellectuals in the US, further strengthening ties with the Vietnamese diaspora there. These visits underscore Vietnam's commitment to being a responsible member of the international community, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development.
