Belgian Woman Arrested for Attempted Cannabis Smuggling at Phuket Airport

On July 7, a 21-year-old Belgian woman was arrested at Phuket International Airport on charges of attempting to smuggle over 31 kilograms of cannabis out of the country, packed in two suitcases, Amarin TV reported. Officials at the southern island airport searched the two suitcases, one green and white one and the other black, belonging to Ms. Salma, and found 12 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis flowers weighing 28.3kg, and eight bags of processed cannabis weighing 3.4kg, totaling approximately 31.7kg. The suspect initially confessed that the suitcases and all the seized items belonged to her. She was charged with attempting to smuggle goods out of country without clearing customs procedures, under Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017), as well as violating the Narcotics Code, Thai Traditional Medicine Protection and Promotion Act B.E. 2542 (1999), the Ministry of Public Health Announcement on Controlled Herbs (Cannabis) B.E. 2568 (2025), and other related laws. The officers then took the suspect and seized items to the Sakhu police station for further legal proceedings. Pol. Col. Salan Santisasanakul, superintendent of Sakhu police station, said this case resulted from integrated cooperation among security and customs agencies in intensifying inspection of passengers and baggage at Phuket Airport to prevent the smuggling of illegal items out of the country. He affirmed that all offenders will be prosecuted decisively according to the law. This incident highlights ongoing attempts at drug smuggling from Thailand's tourist destinations, prompting authorities to further strengthen surveillance at the airport.
