Hưng Yên Officer Missing After River Rescue Attempt Amidst Inter-City Concerns

An officer in Hưng Yên province is missing after jumping into the Trà Lý River to save a man who attempted suicide by jumping from a bridge. Search operations are currently underway. The incident occurred around 9:40 AM on September 12 near the Bo Bridge in Hưng Yên province. Lieutenant Colonel Trần Văn Tùng, 39, of the 568th Infantry Regiment, was on his way back to his unit after completing a mission when he witnessed a 30-year-old man struggling with his mother on the bridge, intending to jump into the river. Lt. Col. Tùng and another passerby, Mr. Tiến, approached the man and persistently persuaded him to abandon his suicidal intentions. The man eventually agreed to get off the bridge and asked the officer to take him home. However, at approximately 9:45 AM, as Lt. Col. Tùng was returning to his motorcycle, the young man suddenly jumped into the Trà Lý River. Lt. Col. Tùng immediately plunged into the water to rescue him. While Lt. Col. Tùng managed to swim towards the jumper and reach him, he was swept away by the strong current, and both individuals became missing. Upon receiving the report, the Hưng Yên Provincial Military Command, the 568th Infantry Regiment, and leaders from relevant units and localities directed rescue efforts, secured the scene, and gathered information. Currently, authorities are coordinating with the 116 Water Rescue Team, mobilizing vessels and personnel to intensively search for Lt. Col. Tùng and the young man on the Trà Lý River. This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns about river safety and the need for preventive measures against similar tragedies. In Vietnam, alongside economic development, issues stemming from social stress and isolation are also being noted, underscoring the challenge of strengthening public support systems.
