Cambodia Urges Caution Against False Information Spread
Cambodia's Ministry of Information urged the public, especially youth, to exercise caution before sharing information on social media. False information is seen as a threat to social order and security, with approximately 4,000 cases identified in 2025 and over 2,000 in the first half of 2026.
The Ministry of Information has called on the public, especially young people, to exercise high caution before sharing information on social media and to cease the dissemination of false information, in order to maintain social order. H.E. Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, stressed that careless use of social media can lead to chaos and severely impact social security. H.E. Tep Asnarith stated that the Ministry of Information identified approximately 4,000 cases of false information in 2025. In the first half of 2026 alone, these cases exceeded 2,000, representing an increase of nearly 30% compared to the same period last year. During the event, H.E. Tep Asnarith appealed to citizens, particularly social media users, to exercise high responsibility in their comments and sharing, and to thoroughly verify information sources beforehand to collectively build a safe and harmonious social environment. "We must be cautious. We are enjoying the use of our digital means, with information at our fingertips. Among this, false information is also at your fingertips. Therefore, we must let false information end at our fingertips and not allow it to be spread further," he stated. The campaign "Say No to False Information," phase two, under the theme "Strengthening Information and Media Literacy for Information Security," was officially launched on May 18, 2026, at Samdech Hun Sen Bun Rany Phnom Penh High School, presided over by H.E. Net Pheaktra, Minister of Information. The campaign is conducted with the objective of enhancing public awareness about the dangers of false information and methods of self-protection from deception in the digital era, as well as strengthening citizens' capacity to receive and use information with a sense of responsibility. Furthermore, this initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the Royal Government and the Ministry of Information in strengthening information security and building digital resilience for every citizen, especially in protecting Cambodian youth from the perils of false information. It should be noted that phase two of the campaign has reached the implementation stage in secondary and high schools in 10 target provinces and cities, including Phnom Penh, Preah Vihear, Takeo, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Poipet, Kampot, and Kep.
