Vietnam, India Eye Stronger Party-to-Party Ties

Vietnam and India enjoy a special relationship based on traditional friendship, solidarity, mutual support, and high political trust. The elevation of bilateral ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the visit of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam to India in May 2026 marked a significant milestone. Amidst this strengthening relationship, both nations have reaffirmed the importance of deepening exchanges at the Party level. Vietnam's emphasis on its relationship with India is rooted in its foreign policy strategy to build diverse partnerships while balancing its growing regional influence against China, as Vietnam continues its economic growth. India serves as a crucial strategic partner for Vietnam in South Asia, and enhancing economic and political cooperation is expected to bolster Vietnam's standing in the international arena. The two countries have also set a trade target of US$25 billion, suggesting that closer Party-to-Party ties could spur concrete progress in economic cooperation. The Vietnamese leader's visit to India also included participation in the BRICS Summit, serving as an opportunity to advance Vietnam's multilateral diplomacy. This reflects Vietnam's approach to skillfully managing its international relations and maximizing national interests while maintaining its one-party system.
