10 Years of Disability Law: Government Stresses Real Implementation for Policy Success

Ten years have passed since the enactment of Indonesia's law on disability rights (UU Disabilitas). On this milestone, government officials have expressed the view that the true success of the law hinges on how concretely and effectively its principles are implemented in the lives of citizens. The law aims to create an environment where people with disabilities can participate in society and live without discrimination. However, ten years after its enactment, further verification and improvement are needed to determine if its benefits have fully reached all individuals with disabilities. Government officials point out that while the law's articles hold significant meaning, how they are materialized at the ground level is the decisive factor in the success or failure of the policy. Specifically, securing employment opportunities, improving access to education, making public transportation and facilities barrier-free, and reforming societal awareness are cited as concrete implementation items. To further enhance the law's effectiveness, collaboration is essential not only between the central government but also with local governments, private companies, and civil society. Listening to the voices of people with disabilities and continuously implementing policies tailored to on-the-ground needs will be the key to achieving a truly inclusive society beyond this ten-year milestone.
