Cambodia's Vehicle Imports Surge 32% to $1.56 Billion in H1 Amid Growing Domestic Demand

PHNOM PENH, July 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia imported $1.56 billion worth of vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 31.9 percent from a year earlier, as rising incomes and consumer demand continue to drive the country’s automotive market, official data showed Thursday. Figures from the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) underline the sector’s rapid expansion, with imports rebounding strongly after last year’s slowdown. Ngorn Saing, CEO of RMA Cambodia, said the market is expanding year by year, supported by a young population and growing appetite for cars. “Cambodia’s economic situation has improved. People have jobs and higher incomes, giving them greater ability to purchase vehicles,” he said. Rising imports have also become a key contributor to customs revenue. Kun Nhem, Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister and GDCE Director‑General, said taxes collected from vehicle and machinery imports accounted for 44 percent of total customs revenue in 2025, making the category the largest source of income. He noted vehicle imports rose 61 percent last year to around 83,000 units, helping drive a 21 percent increase in customs revenue. The latest surge reflects both stronger domestic demand and Cambodia’s growing role as a regional market for automotive trade, though the dependence on imports also highlights vulnerabilities to external price swings and supply chain pressures.
