Vinh Long Province Connects Green Power Supply and Demand, Fostering Sustainable Production

Vinh Long Province, situated in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region, has taken a significant step towards building a sustainable production system. On September 17, the Provincial Department of Industry and Trade organized a conference titled "Connecting Green Electricity Supply and Demand, Promoting Green Production, and Implementing the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) Mechanism in Vinh Long Province." This conference aims to enhance the utilization of renewable energy within the province and strengthen related economic activities. Vietnam has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, but it faces the dual challenges of increasing energy demand and addressing environmental issues. In particular, the development of its manufacturing sector drives up electricity consumption and tends to increase reliance on fossil fuels. Under these circumstances, Vinh Long Province's focus on green electricity procurement and supply can be seen as a concrete move to promote the country's energy transition policy and its shift towards a more environmentally conscious economic model. The conference sought to strengthen cooperation between electricity suppliers and consumers, aiming to establish a system for more efficient and stable supply of electricity from renewable sources. Furthermore, discussions were held on the implementation mechanism for Direct Power Purchase Agreements (DPPA). DPPA is a contractual form where renewable energy producers and consumers directly buy and sell electricity without intermediaries, offering consumers a stable supply of green electricity and providers a new revenue stream. This is an initiative attracting attention from the perspective of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing. The Vietnamese government has set long-term development goals aiming for developed country status by 2045, and establishing a sustainable energy supply system is crucial for achieving this. Vinh Long Province's current initiative is expected to contribute to national goals as a concrete action at the local level. This move is also anticipated to have a ripple effect on other regions within Vietnam and in Southeast Asian countries facing similar challenges.
