Vietnam, US Launch Five-Year Health Cooperation

Vietnam and the United States have launched a new five-year cooperation program to further deepen health sector collaboration between the two countries. This initiative aims to strengthen Vietnam's capacity in HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis prevention and control, as well as enhance its response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The cooperation is expected to contribute to improving Vietnam's healthcare infrastructure, particularly at the grassroots level. Specific areas may include the introduction of advanced orthopedic techniques and improved access to sophisticated medical technologies such as robotic surgery. Vietnam has been attracting foreign patients due to the availability of advanced medical treatments at approximately one-tenth of the cost in the US. Furthermore, the utilization of digital health technologies will be a key component. This is anticipated to enhance the quality and efficiency of healthcare services for Vietnamese citizens through improved medical information sharing, promotion of telemedicine, and modernization of disease surveillance systems. While Vietnam's economic growth under its one-party system has been remarkable, addressing disparities in healthcare and further developing its universal health insurance system remain key challenges. International cooperation can play a supportive role in these efforts. In the context of its relations with China, Vietnam is managing its economic dependence while strengthening ties with the US on security matters. Enhanced cooperation in the health sector can also serve as a factor in stabilizing Vietnam's position within the international community from a geopolitical perspective.
