Bangkok Central Business District Undergoes Major Telecom Cable Overhaul Ahead of IMF-World Bank Meetings

Bangkok is stepping up preparations to host the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings from October 12-18, 2026. As part of these efforts, True Corporation, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and other relevant agencies, has commenced a project to underground telecom cables along three key economic routes in the heart of the capital, covering a total distance of 11.3 kilometers. This initiative aims to resolve the issue of unsightly and disordered communication cables strung across utility poles, thereby enhancing the urban landscape and bolstering the safety and reliability of infrastructure to welcome global leaders in finance and economics. The targeted areas include Rama IV Road (from Hua Lamphong to Sukhumvit), Sathorn Road (from Rama IV Road to Narathiwat Road), and Wittayu Road (from Phetchaburi Road to Phetchaburi Road). To minimize disruption to traffic and public movement, the work will primarily be conducted during nighttime hours. Obsolete and unused cables will be removed concurrently. Upon completion, this project is expected to transform the central business district of Bangkok into a more modern, orderly, and secure urban environment, underscoring Thailand's potential as a smart city and fostering economic growth. The commencement of the work was attended by Mr. Rachan Anvech, MEA's Deputy Governor for Digital Technology and Communication Systems; Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok; and Ms. Kanokporn Khunchaijaroenkul, Head of Corporate Governance Regulatory Strategy at True Corporation, who observed the operations.
