Tornado hits Paung Township, damaging over 70 houses, monasteries, schools, and government buildings

A tornado struck Kadar Ward in Paung Township, Mon State, around 7:30 PM yesterday, July 5, damaging over 70 houses, as well as monasteries, schools, and government buildings, according to local residents. A resident of Kadar Ward said that the tornado started from the lower part of Kadar Ward, in the Kwin area, and blew through Kadar New Town from 4th Street to 13th Street, and then continued to the Day Pain 2nd Section of Kadonsee Ward. The resident added, "In the Kadar New Town area alone, over 70 houses had their roofs damaged. In the Day Pain 2nd Section of Kadonsee Ward, about three houses had their roofs damaged. Trees were also felled, and electric poles were also knocked down. The electricity has been out since the tornado hit last night. The duration of the tornado was only about 5 minutes." Furthermore, it was reported that the Kan Taw Oo monastery, located at Kan Taw Oo Lake, suffered severe damage, and two monks were injured, one of whom is said to be in serious condition. In addition, buildings of the Township General Administration Department, Township Irrigation Department, Township Cooperative Department, and Township Road Department were damaged, and damage was also reported at Minthant High School, according to local residents. Myanmar Fire Brigade, Paung Township Police Force, Municipal Committee staff, volunteer social welfare organizations, and local residents are jointly clearing the damage caused by the tornado. It was reported that between July 24 and 27 of last year, 2025, tornadoes that occurred in Paung Ward, Moh Naing Ward, Alak Village, Lpanntaw Village, Katun Village, and Yin Ngin Taung Village in Paung Township, damaged over 350 houses, as well as religious buildings, one fire station, electric poles, and many trees, and that more than 14 local residents were injured.
