ASEAN at 59: Vietnam's Role in Regional Cooperation and Global Standing
As ASEAN marks its 59th anniversary, Vietnam plays a crucial role in enhancing regional cooperation and global standing. Vietnam's coordinating capacity is highlighted in trade with China and advancing the Strategic Partnership with the EU.
As ASEAN celebrates its 59th anniversary, its central role in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the region is being reaffirmed. Vietnam, in particular, is demonstrating its coordinating capacity in the growth and enhanced global standing of this regional organization. Thai Ambassador to Mexico Rooge Thammongkol, rotating Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Mexico City (ACMC) for July-December, stated that ASEAN has grown into one of the world’s most successful regional organizations and plays a central role in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Economically, the China-ASEAN trade partnership shows resilience amid strong H1 growth. This indicates that ASEAN member states, including Vietnam, are maintaining stable trade relations despite global economic uncertainties. Diplomatically, the European Union (EU) is counting on Vietnam’s coordinating role to advance the Strategic Partnership between ASEAN and the EU. Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister pledged continued contributions to strengthening ASEAN-EU ties, highlighting Vietnam's proactive stance in regional diplomacy. Under its one-party system, Vietnam's economic growth is a driving force for ASEAN's overall development. In its relations with China, Vietnam aims to strike a geopolitical balance while prioritizing economic ties. Through the ASEAN framework, Vietnam seeks to maximize its national interests and increase its regional influence.
