Cambodian Workers Seek Wage Hikes Balancing Livelihoods and Enterprise Stability

Workers in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, have expressed their support for wage increases. However, they emphasize that wage adjustments should be set at a reasonable level that can both improve workers' livelihoods and maintain enterprise stability, while also preserving existing jobs and creating new employment opportunities. Dib Sophal, a worker at a factory in Phnom Penh, stated, "Everyone wants a higher salary, but in the current context, we need to consider the actual situation. For me, I want a salary that is appropriate and acceptable to both the factory owners and the workers. If we demand too much, job opportunities might be lost as owners might relocate their factories to countries with lower wage levels." Similarly, Samrit Sokheang, another female worker in Phnom Penh, indicated that current wages are acceptable, and a moderate increase would be beneficial for workers' living conditions, but it should not exceed the enterprises' capacity to pay. "The current salary is acceptable, and if it increases a bit more, it would be even better, but it shouldn't go beyond the capacity to the point where factory owners cannot provide it," she said. Bou Rum, another factory worker, highlighted the importance of balancing improved wages with job stability. He believes that wage increases should be within a range that allows enterprises to continue operating, maintain old jobs, and have the capacity to expand their businesses and create new jobs. "Excessive increases that investors cannot accept will ultimately harm the employees. Therefore, wage increases should be at a level that can guarantee old jobs, create new jobs, ensure the factory remains stable, and expands further," Bou Rum stated. The statements from these workers indicate that wage increases are not only about the amount workers receive but also about enterprises' ability to retain jobs, continue investment, and create new employment opportunities for citizens.
