Speaking at the ceremony for the new Toyota vehicle assembly line at the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone on July 2, 2026, Ambassador Ueno acknowledged that border issues with Thailand and the proliferation of online scams in 2025 have led some foreign investors to view Cambodia with suspicion. However, he emphasized that Japan continues to trust Cambodia, and Toyota's production line expansion is a testament to this trust. "In the context of declining investor confidence, the fact that Toyota, a leading Japanese brand, is operating a car manufacturing business in Cambodia and achieving significant success in both vehicle sales and human resource development will greatly contribute to enhancing Cambodia's image as an investment destination," the Ambassador stated. He further added that the Japanese Embassy will continue to support Japanese investment in Cambodia and hopes that Toyota vehicles manufactured in Cambodia will be well-loved by the Cambodian people and contribute to the economy for a long time to come. First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and Deputy Prime Minister, Sun Chanthol, expressed gratitude to Japan for promoting economic diplomacy with Cambodia. He affirmed that the Cambodian government has implemented various plans to reduce production costs, address energy issues, and resolve investor difficulties, with a particular commitment to eradicating online scam crimes from the country. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol told reporters, "This is their success, and I hope Toyota will help disseminate this message to other Japanese companies to invest in Cambodia. Secondly, for other companies besides Toyota, including Chinese, Korean, American, and European firms, when they see this news that the globally renowned Toyota has invested in Cambodia and further expanded its production line!
