Nghệ An General Hospital: 'Meals of Compassion' Support Patients and Families
Every Friday, the Women's Union of the Nghệ An Provincial Police provides free meals to patients and their families at Nghệ An General Hospital. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens and offer moral support, enabling individuals to focus on their treatment.
At Nghệ An General Hospital in central Vietnam, warm 'meals of compassion' are delivered every Friday to patients and their families battling illness, extending a circle of community support and bringing hope to the medical frontlines. For over a year, the Women's Union of the Nghệ An Provincial Police has been visiting the hospital every Friday at noon to provide free meals to inpatients and their families. This initiative aims not only to offer material assistance but also to provide moral encouragement, fostering a sense of security that allows patients and their families to focus on treatment. For example, Mr. Lô Văn Biên from xã Tiền Phong is caring for his wife, who suffered a stroke and requires long-term treatment. While most of his wife's medical expenses are covered by insurance, managing daily meals for both of them remains a significant burden. Therefore, any reduction in meal costs is a substantial help in supporting his wife's extended treatment journey. According to Captain Lê Diệu Thúy, head of the Women's Union of the Nghệ An Provincial Police, the program was launched in July 2025. Every Friday, priority is given to patients in difficult circumstances and those requiring long-term hospitalization, as recommended by the hospital's Social Work Department. The union prepares over 100 meals, flexibly increasing the quantity to accommodate newly admitted patients who haven't registered or received meal vouchers. 'Anyone with a hospitalized relative understands the pressure and anxiety weighing on them. We want to share with them through concrete, sincere, and practical actions,' Captain Lê Diệu Thúy shared. Dr. Nguyễn Hồng Trường, Director of Nghệ An General Hospital, stated that amidst the fight against illness, patients and their families face numerous worries about health and treatment costs. Community support in such situations is a precious resource, enabling them to continue their healing journey. The hospital has received significant attention and heartfelt cooperation from various sponsors for patients facing special difficulties. These gifts and support have helped alleviate treatment burdens, giving many patients a better opportunity for timely medical care and peace of mind on their path to recovery. Dr. Trường added, 'Some gifts are given in a moment, but their value endures. They are not only practical support for the sick but also an uplifting embrace of love, allowing them to feel the community's care and solidarity during their most vulnerable times.'
