Ex-Iriga City Mayor Arrested for Malversation
Former Iriga City Mayor Madelaine Alfelor has surrendered to authorities after an arrest warrant was issued for her in connection with a malversation case involving approximately P30 million in public funds. Bail has not been recommended.
MANILA, Philippines — Former Iriga City Mayor Madelaine Alfelor has surrendered to authorities after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant for her arrest in connection with a malversation case involving approximately P30 million in public funds. Alfelor is facing charges of malversation of public funds through falsification of public documents and violation of Republic Act 3019, or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. The anti-graft court has recommended no bail for her temporary liberty. Apart from Alfelor, former city officials Ruben delos Santos and Jean Bongon also have arrest warrants issued against them. Alfelor has been committed to the Quezon City Jail female dormitory, while Delos Santos is being held at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas, the Sandiganbayan Security and Sheriff Services Division said. Bongon has yet to be arrested. According to the complaint filed by the Office of the Ombudsman, Alfelor and her co-defendants are accused of defrauding the city government through the alleged mishandling of funds intended for beneficiaries of the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program. Investigation showed the list of the AICS beneficiaries included dead people and fake names.
