Thai Travel Plus Delayed as Government Eyes Optimal Timing for Tourism Boost

Thailand's government is considering postponing the launch of the "Thai Travel Plus" domestic tourism scheme from its original October 1, 2026, date to the low season, beginning around April 2027. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul announced the potential shift, which aims to maximize the economic impact of the B4 billion tourism stimulus program. The proposed change emerged from discussions at Cabinet, ministry, and ministerial levels, where there was broad agreement on the need for a domestic tourism stimulus but differing views on the optimal timing. The core idea is to avoid significant government spending during the peak high season (late 2026 into early 2027), when domestic and international travel demand is already high and hotel occupancy is typically strong. Launching the scheme during this period could lead to less additional economic activity. Conversely, deploying the same budget during the low season could provide a much-needed boost to businesses when they need it most. The "Thai Travel Plus" scheme, with a budget of approximately B4 billion, is designed to offer 1 million entitlements. These would include subsidies for accommodation at B1,500 per night for up to five nights, along with digital co-payment vouchers. The vouchers would operate on a 50:50 co-payment basis, valued at B1,500 daily in major destinations and B2,000 in secondary destinations. While the scheme's principles, conditions, and budget have received preliminary approval and funding is reserved, the original plan stipulated travel from November 2026 through February 2027, with a blackout period from December 15, 2026, to January 15, 2027, to circumvent the New Year holidays. Ministers expressed concern that operating the program around this blackout period could fragment its impact and reduce its overall effectiveness. "Most ministers agreed that it would be better to combine the program and implement it after the New Year period," Minister Surasak stated, confirming the B4 billion budget is set aside from the emergency borrowing decree allocation. Furthermore, the government is exploring an extension of the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" program to support domestic travel from October to December 2026. This would provide a tourism stimulus for two to three months before "Thai Travel Plus" commences in the low season, potentially coinciding with school holidays for family travel. This strategic timing reflects concerns that tourism spending incentives are less effective when hotels are already operating at high occupancy. Some hotel operators have indicated that a high-season program might not generate substantial additional demand due to pre-planned trips and high existing bookings. However, views among private sector operators are not uniform. Minister Surasak acknowledged that some businesses might still have available rooms during the high season and could benefit from domestic visitors.
